GALLERY WEST PRESENTS: Chasing the Tempest:

Color and Infrared Images of Storms Over the Northern Plains

Gallery Wests July show features the extraordinary color and infrared photography of Jefferson Evans, who follows the great storms of the Midwest. Located at 1213 King Street in Old Town Alexandrias Boutique District, the show will run from July 7 August 1. The reception on July 17th is open to the public and will include refreshments. The gallery will also be open on Thursday, July 8th until 9 p.m., in conjunction with the Old Town Alexandria Second Thursday Art Walk.

Evans has been perfecting his photographic technique since the 1990s, when he began to work with travel images. Over time, he has acquired specialized equipment that has allowed him to expand into nature photography, and his detailed images of flowers and insects have proved popular with collectors. But a lifelong fascination with storms led him to join a chasing tour in 2009, with searches averaging 480 miles a day in pursuit of dramatic skies. Once the chase is on, says Evans, you can't cover enough miles. That is what the rush of adrenaline does, not to mention the possibility of capturing really special images. The photographs in this show reflect the passion he has for identifying and recording rare sights that take the viewer into a world few of us actually witness.

Evans is a member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society and the Springfield Art Guild, and has garnered a first place award in the 2009 Green Spring Garden Park Art Show and a third place in Gallery Wests 2010 National Juried show.

Gallery West is one of the oldest cooperative galleries in Northern Virginia. Boasting two floors of fine art, it showcases new work every month by the regular membership as well as the featured event. Members are award-winning artists working in such diverse mediums as painting, collage, photography, digital art, ceramics, sculpture and jewelry. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and until 9 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month. Additional information and images can be seen at www.gallery-west.com. Fetival In-dipendente

Il progetto People Involvement di Frigento (primo laboratorio di un programma di coinvolgimento popolare), all?interno della sua programmazione estiva, realizzerà, nella serie di eventi denominati Sinergie, un Festival Rock Indie, quale evento simbolico di massa. Molti esprimeranno da copione perplessità o critiche scontate. La natura sperimentale del progetto di prevenzione primaria ci obbliga ad essere nuvole nei cieli del possibile. Non vogliamo riproporre la solita logica che accompagna i ?grandi eventi? nel nostro claudicante Sud: l?artista blasonato che si presta a due ore di spettacolo per un considerevole cachet, lasciando un?eco pari al vuoto rancoroso che l?accompagna. Noi pensiamo ad una serie di realtà indipendenti della musica italiana che si uniscono per incontrare una prevenzione fatta di coinvolgimento e di partecipazione. Un evento per i giovani irpini poco abituati a frequentare ciò che non è commerciale e mediatico. L?arte non dovrebbe abbeverarsi nelle acque torbide del mercato, che impone solo l?efficienza economico-finanziaria. Parlare di abuso di sostanze psicotrope, oltre la logica repressiva, ci chiama a realizzare qualcosa di non convenzionale, di aprire un percorso nuovo che immagini una prospettiva. Organizzare un evento come questo a Frigento è un azzardo che urterà le coscienze benpensanti della provincia italiana, in particolar modo meridionale, da sempre abituata a masticare triti cliché. Dove il luogo comune teorizza lo scandalo, l?eccesso, l?immorale, noi cerchiamo di depositare un senso alternativo, un ?altri/menti?. L?Irpinia è l?eterna provincia italiana, vittima di un sentire nazionale troppo provvido di retorica e poco di prassi. Vittima di una natura matrigna, che ha scagliato la sua rabbia con un terremoto che ha sprofondato un territorio in ginocchio. Vittima degli sciacalli di ogni risma che sulla sofferenza e la morte hanno mangiato l?anima e la cultura dei nostri luoghi, promettendo un cambiamento che ha indossato la maschera della farsa dopo l?immane tragedia. Cercheremo di dimostrare che il Sud, e un paesino dell?Irpinia, sono in grado di recepire e pensare, oltre l?identità liquefatta, un pensiero sul cambiamento che attraversi l?intero Paese.
